Opening Ceremony of the 2nd Anniversary Celebration of the Macao Union Medical Center and the Medical and Health Forum commenced
MACAU, September 30 - The Islands Healthcare Complex – Macao Medical Center of Peking Union Medical College Hospital (hereinafter referred to as “Macao Union Medical Center”) hosted the “Opening Ceremony of the 2nd Anniversary Celebration of the Macao Union Medical Center and the Medical and Health Forum” on 16 September. O Lam, the representative of the Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) and Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture; Bian Lixin, Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao SAR; Ai Yiping, Director of the Department of Personnel and the Department of Social Development of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR; Academician Zhao Yupei, President of the Chinese Medical Association and Honorary President of Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH); Academician Zhou Jian, President of Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University; Zhang Shuyang, President of Peking Union Medical College Hospital; He Xiang, Secretary-General of the Chinese Medical Association; Li Wei, Deputy Director of the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office of the National Health Commission; Lo Iek Long, Director of the Macao Health Bureau; and Liu Zhengyin, Director of the Macao Union Medical Center served as the officiating guests at the opening ceremony.
In her opening remarks, Secretary O Lam stated that the Macao Union Medical Center was established with the strong support from the Central Government and the guidance from the National Health Commission. Since its trial operation at the end of 2023, the Macao SAR Government has entrusted the institution with three primary objectives: “optimizing public healthcare services, exploring the high-end medical market, and nurturing local talent.” She hoped the institution would further solidify its collaboration with Conde de São Januário General Hospital and other medical institutions to form a differentiated development model with complementary advantages. By leveraging the professional expertise, technical capabilities, and talent advantages of PUMCH, the Macao Union Medical Center is expected to continuously enhance the quality of health care for complex and severe diseases, as well as signature medical services in Macao. Additionally, she anticipated the Macao Union Medical Center to strengthen the training of local medical professionals, steadily expand international medical services, foster the growth of “medical tourism,” and empower the big health industry with enhanced effectiveness and quality. Furthermore, she expressed the hope for the Macao Union Medical Center to spearhead the establishment of an “overseas medical research center” to promote the integration of clinical, teaching, and research resources, while remaining committed to talent development, thereby gradually shaping a medical research and translational platform that serves the Greater Bay Area and connects globally to bolster Macao’s influence in medical research.
In his address, Academician Zhao Yupei noted that General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized the fundamental principles of putting people and their lives above all else and highlighted the healthcare development path with Chinese characteristics in his pivotal Qiushi journal article entitled “Accelerating the Progress of Healthy China Initiative.” Each step forward made by the Macao Union Medical Center represents a vivid demonstration of the strategic blueprint to realize the Healthy China Initiative by 2035. From the top-level design to blueprint implementation, and from initial exploration to full-scale high-quality development, both the Central and Macao SAR governments have consistently offered robust leadership and support to the Macao Union Medical Center. The institutional advantages and policy dividends of the “One Country, Two Systems” framework have paved the way for in-depth medical collaboration between Beijing and Macao. At the same time, leveraging the guest expert pool mechanism at the Macao Union Medical Center, the Macao medical team has experienced rapid growth through on-site teaching, online grand rounds, and multidisciplinary consultation. This process has accelerated the transition from blood-transfusion assistance to blood-making cultivation, thereby expediting the realization of local residents’ aspiration for “Treating Major Diseases in Macao.”
In her remarks, President Zhang Shuyang pointed out that over the past two years, PUMCH has remained true to its mission. By seamlessly aligning the Macao Union Medical Center’s operations with “the country’s needs, Macao’s aspirations, and PUMCH’s strengths,” it has successfully propelled the Macao Union Medical Center from its initial opening into a new era of high-quality development. Furthermore, the Macao Union Medical Center has introduced a number of complex technologies, exemplified by the deployment of a da Vinci Xi Robot for pancreatic surgery. It has also established Macao’s largest Radiation Oncology Center, inaugurated the first public nuclear medicine department, launched the Assisted Reproduction Center, and opened the intensive care unit in June this year. The vision of “Treating Major Diseases in Macao” has progressively transformed into a tangible health reality for Macao residents, showcasing the most vivid and profound practice of the institutional advantages of the “One Country, Two Systems” framework in the health care sector. She expressed her expectation for the Macao Union Medical Center not only to deliver exceptional local medical services, but also to proactively integrate into the country’s overall development strategy, closely aligning with Macao’s “1+4” development strategy for adequate economic diversification. By doing so, the medical institution can serve as a health haven for Macao residents, and more importantly, as a shining calling card for China’s medical sector to open up and interface with the global community.
During the opening ceremony, the Macao Union Medical Center announced the official establishment of the “Guest Expert Pool,” and Secretary O Lam, President Zhang Shuyang, Director Lo Iek Long, and Director Liu Zhengyin presented letters of appointment to eight guest expert representatives: Academician Zhou Jian, President of Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University; Professor Zhang Wenhong, Director of the National Medical Center for Infectious Diseases (Shanghai) and Huashan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University; Professor Wu Xinjuan, President of the Chinese Nursing Association and Professor at PUMCH; Professor Yang Aiming, Professor Song Hongmei, Professor Leng Xiaomei, Professor Wang Qian, and Associate Professor Xu Qiang from PUMCH.
In addition, the Medical and Health Forum also invited Academician Zhou Jian and Professor Zhang Wenhong to deliver keynote speeches on “Empowering High-Quality Hospital Development through Academic Disciplines, Talent and Clinical Research Translation” and “Developing Infection Prevention Capabilities and Public Health Resilience in International Medical Centers,” respectively. In closing, Lao Hio Fai, Deputy Director of the Macao Union Medical Center, delivered the closing remarks for the keynote session.
Attending guests also included: representatives from various departments of the Macao SAR government; members of the Strategic Development Committee and Supervisory Board of the Macao Union Medical Center; representatives from PUMCH; experts seconded by PUMCH in Macao; representatives from the financial sector, integrated tourism and leisure enterprises, and local associations; medical professionals, and administrative and management staff of the Macao Union Medical Center; invited experts and speakers; and local medical personnel, totaling more than 500 participants.
